Our EE Target Audience

 

Our environmental education program will target local natural resource users including local communities, loggers, game meat hunters, grazers, honey hunters, traditional healers, mountain tourist guides and porters. Others are local leaders, Law enforcers, politicians, schools, colleges, public institutions at national and county governments, media, tour operators and religious organizations.

 

Our EE Activities include:

 

  • Training and capacity building of teachers, CBOs and local communities on conservation strategies through workshops, exhibitions, seminars ,study tours etc

  • Teachers environmental training workshops

  • Developing conservation education instruction manual

  • Developing education materials for various target groups

  • Nature study lessons for kids

  • Developing school environmental clubs( eco-clubs)

  • Conservation essay writing, sports, drama and music competition for schools

  • Outdoor environmental programs for the youth including high schools, colleges and universities

  • Training workshops for tour operators, mountain guides and porters

  • Training and awareness workshops for local community groups

  • Conservation exhibitions

  • Mt. Kenya Conservation Week- involves events like tree planting, mountain hiking, wildlife tours, nature photography, competition for schools, conservation symposium, eco-exhibitions etc

  • Wildlife and plant ecology

  • Wildlife and habitat conservation and protection

  • Benefits and threats to environmental conservation

  • Coexisting with wildlife and mitigating human/wildlife conflicts

  • Environmental  protection and restoration

  • Sustainable conservation of natural resources including forests, rivers, and land resources

  • Waste management

  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation

  • Energy  conservation

  • Development and the environment

  • Conservation leadership and self awareness

 

Implementing our EE Program (Instructional Methods)

Deending on our target audience, various instructional will be applied:

 

  • Publicity and extension- preparation of publication/extension materials such as  pamphlets, handouts, circulars, posters and media programs through TV, radio, video tapes, etc.

  • Adult education lectures and talks

  • Field  study tours

  • Nature interpretation

  • Games , songs and plays

  • Role playing / theatre / puppet shows

  • Interactive lessons using visual aides

  • Small group, peer-learning

  • Movies and videos especially for the youth and students

  • Participation in festival days

  • Demonstrations

  • Community and leaders meetings and workshops

  • Community discussion groups

  • Teacher Workshops (workshops usually include activities, small group discussions and demonstrations)

 

Building our Internal EE Capacity

 

To effectively implement our EE program it will be imperative to build our own internal capacity. To do this Mt. Kenya Conservation Forum will recruit a small team of EE specialists who will also undertake skills enhancing courses from time to time.
