Mount Kenya Conservation Forum
Eco-Schools Program is a youth engagement program of the Mt. Kenya Conservation Forum that combines environmental sustainability practices into school programs and after–school programming.
We partner with local schools and conservation mentors to empower students to participate in conservation and inspire behavioral changes in their schools, homes and communities towards conservation of the environment.
The whole essence is empowering the next generation of conservation leaders.
Building Conservation Leadership in schools
Student-led, our Eco-Schools Program empowers students to become leaders in their schools and communities by forming Conservation Clubs which work with local and/or international conservation professionals who volunteer as mentors.
Mentors provide the skills, knowledge and experience of the environmental sustainability, creating an important link between student action and positive impact on conservation of the environment.
How it works
Student Obligations
Through a School Conservation Club, students are engaged in conservation activities through award winning competition.
Prizes go to the top performing school and the conservation club driving the victory.
Competition is based on various broad conservation practices in form of skills, knowledge and behavior such as energy conservation and efficiency in the school, water conservation, sustainable farming/crop production in schools, waste reduction and management, healthy living, tree nursery establishment and management, participation in environmental events, essay writing/drama/sports competition among other sustainability initiatives.
Eco-School Management obligations
Schools under our Eco- Schools Program agree to adopt environmental conservation practices such as rain water harvesting, water efficiency, waste reduction, school forestation, energy efficiency in all aspects: cooking, lighting, water heating etc, providing students with adequate time for conservation work and participating in community outreach
