AVIAN CONSERVATION

Existing knowledge about Mt. Kenya birds, both in the protected and non-protected areas, including their population sizes, endemism, health, and breeding success, is currently incomplete. Habitat changes and diseases may also be impacting these birds. Using researchers and collaborators this program seeks to evaluate the status of Mt. Kenya forest and high altitude birds, (including those in the rural areas neighbouring Mt. Kenya) and developing strategies to detect species declines in a timely manner. The program will also carry out studies on the ecology of little-known bird species with the aim of developing plans for protecting the most threatened species of birds.

Our approach to avian conservation

-
Developing standardized, simple, time efficient monitoring methods for forest birds that enable us pick up changes in populations as well as factors that may be influencing in population trends and ecosystem changes.
-
Carrying out inventory and distribution of various avian species found in the ecosystem.
-
Determining conservation status of various bird species
-
Developing a check list of various bird species, their habitats, threats and their natural history
-
Monitoring natural and human-induced changes that are likely to impact on avian population sizes, health and breeding success
-
Developing conservation management action plans for immediate and long-term protection of threatened bird species
-
Conducting studies that will help enhance conservation and protection of birds.
-
Raising awareness to ensure appropriate actions are taken to conserve birds at all levels including communities and tourists.
-
Producing avian conservation education materials/information for schools, colleges, communities and tourists
-
Organizing birding expeditions for recreation, enjoyment and conservation awareness.
-
Developing partnerships and collaborations with other organizations that interested in supporting avian conservation
