This placement will involve working closely with local communities and other sources of solid wastes such as hotels and schools with a view to finding sustainable methods of managing wastes. In developing countries management of solid wastes and especially plastic materials poses a great challenge. In low income urban centres this is even a bigger challenge where disposal of organic wastes is an added challenge. Community participation is essential in the choice of methods, in co−operation, in storage and in decisions about separation and recovery of resources. Participatory methods of addressing the problem will be applied.  Specific volunteer activities will include:

• Community education and awareness raising campaigns against environmental pollution.

• Organizing community action groups for waste management, including such strategies as environmental clean ups, waste separation and disposal, recycling and reuse, adopting practices that would reduce waste generation,  

• Organizing group training sessions among other approaches.
